The Derwent Valley lies north of Hobart, toward the headwarters of the Derwent River and long before it widens to flow into Storm Bay. The largest town in the Derwent Valley is New Norfolk, a pleasing and relaxed place yet one which offers plenty of activities.

Further upriver is Hamilton, with no shortage of surrounding attractions including vineyards and nature reserves. However, possibly the best-known of all Derwent Valley locations is Mt. Field National Park, which boasts attractive waterfalls and skifields.
